The questions we get asked most about the Freshwater Salt System.
No. Freshwater replaces the need to manually add chlorine or bromine, since the cartridge generates it automatically. You'll still balance pH and alkalinity, and occasionally shock the water, the same as any spa. It dramatically simplifies water care, but it doesn't eliminate it entirely.
Each disposable titanium cartridge lasts up to four months. A single 3-pack covers a full year of water care, and the control panel will let you know when it's time for a replacement.
No. The salt concentration used is far lower than seawater. Enough for the cartridge to generate chlorine, but not enough to taste or feel salty. Most people notice softer, more natural-feeling water rather than any salt sensation.
Both use the same titanium cartridge to generate chlorine from salt. The standard Salt System is checked with a test strip every ten days; FreshWater IQ adds automatic hourly water testing and gives you clear recommendations, so there's even less manual checking involved.
If you own a compatible HotSpring or Caldera model, yes — reach out with your spa's serial number and we can confirm. If your current spa isn't compatible, we also offer trade-in options toward a new Freshwater-compatible model.
Freshwater is available on all HotSpring Highlife and Limelight Collection spas, and Caldera Utopia and Paradise Collection spas. FreshWater IQ specifically is available on 2024 model years of those same collections.
